Kayasthas are a highly educated caste/community in India. Although Kayasthas are present almost all over India, they are predominant mostly in northern states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. The belief is that all Kayasthas are descendents of Shri Chitragupta ji Maharaj. Karna Kayastha is one of the Kayastha community which is present in Bihar mainly in Darbhnaga, Madhubani, Samastipur, Muzaffarpur, Saharsa and some neighboring areas. This community has undergone several ups and downs but today it is one of the most highly educated and a very successful community in Bihar. The traditional occupation for members of this community used to be of Patwaris or Diwans (book keepers of land lords)and they were fairly affluent. However, after termination of jamindari and patwari system, most of the people were left jobless and went into extreme penury. The people fought hard and after nearly two generations of struggle and tireless effort, now this community has transformed itself in to one of the highly educated and professionally advanced community. Not everything is rosy however, with Karna Kayasthas today. In recent years this community has seen sharp rise in unemployment and poverty due unstable and poor performance of state. However, they continue to fight hard and once only dependent on government jobs and agriculture, now they have also started venturing into business and other professional fields. A large number of people have also migrated to other states in india and abroad. Karna Kayasthas consider themselves as Bhoomi-Putra or son of the land. That is the reason every household will have a place of worship (siraagu) where they will have the soil of their origin. Maithili is considered as mother tongue for of the community and few people also speak bhojpuri and other local dialects.
